Maxim Karpenko's pixel god game hands you a blank map, 37 destruction powers and no objective whatsoever. Four civilised races (Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Orcs) found cities, group into kingdoms and declare wars on their own while you either help them or drop a meteorite on them. Update 0.50 Monolith Awakens, which opened its Steam beta on 1 April 2025, added Ribbits and Coolbeaks as new sapient civilisations plus per species cultures, languages and religions. The map generator can produce 16 different world types, so the only thing a run has in common with the last one is the physics.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Grass Biome)

The most common biome in a generated world and the one with the best survival rate for a brand new city. Food is steady, hostile spawns are rare, and nothing about the terrain punishes a small population while it finds its feet.

Level/Difficulty: Safe for a city you have just placed Key Rewards: Reliable farmland, low hostile spawn rate, fast early population growth

What to Do in Grass Biome

  1. Learn World laws that rewrite the simulation. The World Laws panel changes the rules rather than the terrain, and the two toggles at the bottom right control Natural Disasters and Other Disasters. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Elves as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Save the world file before every experiment. There is no undo button, and a Meteorite dropped on the wrong capital ends four hours of growth in one click.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Meteorite or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand World laws that rewrite the simulation fundamentals
  • Elves selected and functional
  • Grass Biome main content cleared
  • Ready for Savanna

Phase 2: Early Game (Savanna)

High fertility plus passive animals such as Cows and Sheep make Savanna the strongest cradle in the game. A kingdom seeded here reaches its second and third city noticeably faster than the same kingdom seeded on plain grass.

Level/Difficulty: Best opening biome for a race you want to win Key Rewards: Highest early food throughput, Cows and Sheep as free protein

What to Do in Savanna

  1. Work on Kingdoms, clans and war declarations. Cities gather into kingdoms, kingdoms contain clans and families, and wars start on their own once two borders touch. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Meteorite if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. The two disaster toggles sit at the very bottom right of the World Laws panel. Most players who complain that their world keeps dying never found them.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Permafrost.
  5. Consider whether Humans might suit your playstyle better than Elves.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Kingdoms, clans and war declarations integrated into gameplay
  • Meteorite acquired
  • Savanna fully cleared
  • Ready for Permafrost

Phase 3: Mid Game (Permafrost)

Blue tinted soil and pine trees, and the biome where Snowmen and White Walkers spawn hostile to nearly everything alive. Coolbeaks are the civilisation that settles here happily, which is exactly why the 0.50 uplift setups seed penguins in the cold.

Level/Difficulty: Hostile to any race except Coolbeaks Key Rewards: Coolbeak settlement ground, Snowmen and White Walkers as permanent map pressure

What to Do in Permafrost

  1. Master Traits, genes and monolith mutations. Units carry traits you paint on with a brush, from Fast and Tough through to Immortal, and those traits pass down the family line. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Tornado. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Seed cities on Savanna rather than plain Grass Biome if you want a race to win. The Cows and Sheep alone shift the early growth curve.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Cultures, languages and religions for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Traits, genes and monolith mutations mastered
  • Tornado acquired or in progress
  • Permafrost fully cleared
  • Ready for Jungle

Phase 4: Late Game (Jungle)

Fast plant growth and high wood yields, offset by Monkeys that harass villagers and by how quickly fire spreads through the canopy. A Napalm Bomb dropped anywhere near jungle will burn far more than the radius suggests.

Level/Difficulty: Strong for wood, risky for fire Key Rewards: Highest wood yield of any biome, dense cover, Monkey harassment

What to Do in Jungle

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Humans or Elves with optimized gear.
  2. Tornado should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. The trait brush is faster than the Monolith for a controlled test. Paint Immortal on one clan and watch how a kingdom behaves when its ruling family never dies.
  4. Terraforming and biome painting optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Wasteland Biome.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Tornado upgraded to max
  • Jungle fully cleared
  • Ready for Wasteland Biome

Phase 5: Endgame (Wasteland Biome)

Not a biome you find so much as one you create, by bombing an area with atomic bombs or holding an Acid Cloud over it. Nothing grows and no civilisation settles it, so the fastest way to permanently shrink the usable map is to make more of it.

Level/Difficulty: Player made, uninhabitable Key Rewards: Permanent denial of ground, visible record of where you intervened

What to Do in Wasteland Biome

  1. Wasteland Biome tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Lightning kills one unit precisely. Use it on rulers to force succession splits rather than on armies, where a Tornado does the job better.
  3. The endgame loop: run Wasteland Biome, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Ribbits for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Terraforming and biome painting mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Wasteland Biome fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Leaving Natural Disasters on during a long civilisation run, then blaming the AI when a tornado deletes the kingdom you were studying.
  • Spawning all four races on one continent, which produces constant border war and never lets any of them reach a large population.
  • Dropping a Napalm Bomb near Jungle and losing half the map to a fire that keeps spreading through the canopy.
  • Using Acid Cloud on a kingdom you intend to keep. The Wasteland Biome it leaves behind stays uninhabitable long after the units respawn.
  • Placing Monoliths without spawning any animals first, then wondering why no new civilisation appears in the 0.50 uplift setup.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Save the world file before every experiment. There is no undo button, and a Meteorite dropped on the wrong capital ends four hours of growth in one click.
  2. The two disaster toggles sit at the very bottom right of the World Laws panel. Most players who complain that their world keeps dying never found them.
  3. Seed cities on Savanna rather than plain Grass Biome if you want a race to win. The Cows and Sheep alone shift the early growth curve.
  4. The trait brush is faster than the Monolith for a controlled test. Paint Immortal on one clan and watch how a kingdom behaves when its ruling family never dies.
  5. Lightning kills one unit precisely. Use it on rulers to force succession splits rather than on armies, where a Tornado does the job better.
