SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.
Starting SurrounDead can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
SurrounDead is a survival game built around Hunger, thirst and health and Skill tree with free respec. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scavenger | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Marksman | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Melee Brawler | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Base Builder | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Trade Runner | Situational | Run a fixed circuit between one loot area and one trader instead of wandering. Sell damaged duplicates and keep a single repaired example of each calibre you actually shoot. |
Our recommendation: Start with Marksman. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Trade Runner as your first pick. Traders buy loot you cannot use and sell ammunition and medical items you cannot reliably find. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Hunger, thirst and health
Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. Food comes from looted cereal, lettuce and tomatoes, from hunting rabbits, deer, wolves and bears, and from airdrops marked with blue smoke, while water comes from wells and open water.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Hunger, thirst and health works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Whitewood
A small town in the centre of the valley, south west of the central safe zone, with a single street running through it. It packs a police station, a hospital, a grocery store and a gas station into that one street, which is unusually dense for its size.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for M4: it's the most accessible early upgrade. A 5.56 rifle and the most commonly found military weapon, with a long attachment list covering magazines, suppressors, compensators and scopes.
Step 4: Understand Skill tree with free respec
Levelling awards skill points spent in the Skills tab of the journal, opened with J. Points refund with no penalty, so testing a branch costs nothing. Iron Gut cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent per level, and Health Regen restores 1 percent of health every 2 seconds from experience level 2.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to New Richland
One of the last cities to fall during the outbreak, and correspondingly better stocked and more heavily populated with undead. It is a step up from the small towns rather than an early stop.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Hunger, thirst and health
Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. Food comes from looted cereal, lettuce and tomatoes, from hunting rabbits, deer, wolves and bears, and from airdrops marked with blue smoke, while water comes from wells and open water.
Skill tree with free respec
Levelling awards skill points spent in the Skills tab of the journal, opened with J. Points refund with no penalty, so testing a branch costs nothing. Iron Gut cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent per level, and Health Regen restores 1 percent of health every 2 seconds from experience level 2.
Radiation and respirator filters
Some areas are irradiated and require one of four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters have durability, so a mask that worked last week can let Radiation Sickness through this week.
Traders and safe zones
Traders sit inside safe zones and scattered across the valley, and a GPS device puts many of them on your map. The three safe zones are The Valley Safe Zone, the Crashed Ship Safe Zone and the Scavenger Safe Zone.
Vehicles as maintenance and storage
Vehicles need upkeep and double as mobile containers, which matters because a run to somewhere like Gladewater Military Camp produces far more weight than a backpack holds.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Firing unsuppressed inside a town
Gunfire pulls undead from streets you have not entered yet, and a suppressor decides whether somewhere like Whitewood is lootable at all.
2. Ignoring hunger and thirst while looting
Both meters kill outright, and by the time you notice you are usually too far from water to walk back.
3. Entering a radiation zone on a worn filter
Respirator filters have durability, and Radiation Sickness needs a specific cure you may not be carrying.
4. Storing everything in one container
Vehicles double as storage for exactly this reason, and spreading loot between a base and a car costs nothing.
5. Expecting a finished game
SurrounDead has been in Early Access since June 2022 with a very small team behind it, and systems have changed between updates.
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Hunger, thirst and health and Skill tree with free respec
- Choose Marksman as starting build
- Clear Whitewood main content
- Acquire M4 or equivalent upgrade
- Reach New Richland
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
Tips for New Players
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
- Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters wear down, so check durability at the boundary rather than discovering the problem once Radiation Sickness is already applied.
- Spend early skill points on Iron Gut. Each level cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent, which directly extends how far from food and water you can operate.
- Skill points refund with no penalty. Try a branch, see whether it matches how you actually play, and move the points somewhere else if it does not.
- Carry a can opener, lock picks, wire cutters and bolt cutters at all times. Each one opens a category of container or gate, and none are heavy relative to what they unlock.
- Buy a GPS device the first time a trader stocks one. It marks trader positions on the map, which converts aimless wandering into a repeatable selling circuit.
- Bandits are a different problem from the undead. Bandit Rusher, Assault, Sniper and Boss types shoot back and use cover, so the tactics that work on a crowd of Shamblers will get you killed against them.
- Airdrops marked with blue smoke contain rations and are worth the detour early, while food rather than ammunition is the thing limiting how far you can travel.
- Treat debuffs immediately. Bleed, Heavy Bleed, Broken Bones and Radiation Sickness each need a specific medical item, so carry at least one of each instead of a stack of only bandages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SurrounDead finished?
No. It has been in Early Access since 24 June 2022 and the store page still lists multiplayer, a quest and bounty system, a story campaign about The Valley, farming and vehicle customisation as planned features.
Does it have character classes?
No. Every survivor starts identical and differentiates through the skill tree, opened with J from the journal. Points refund freely, so the playstyles described here are habits rather than locked classes.
How many maps are there?
One. Longdown Valley holds the towns of Ellwood, Gladewater, Grain Valley, Lawrence Creek, New Richland, West Grove and Whitewood, plus Creek Prison, FOB Bravo, Valley Airfield, Longdown Port, Pacific Palm Mall and an oil rig. More maps are listed as planned.
Is there multiplayer?
Not yet. The game is single player at present, with online play on player run servers listed among the planned features on its Steam page.
What enemies are there?
Undead Crawlers, Shamblers and Sprinters, Radiated and Infected variants, Feral Hounds, and Undead Boss and Large Undead Boss types. Humans appear as Bandit Rusher, Assault, Sniper and Boss variants plus Coyote troops, and wildlife includes wolves and bears.
