SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear
Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
2. Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it
Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
3. Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military
Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters wear down, so check durability at the boundary rather than discovering the problem once Radiation Sickness is already applied.
4. Spend early skill points on Iron Gut
Spend early skill points on Iron Gut. Each level cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent, which directly extends how far from food and water you can operate.
5. Skill points refund with no penalty
Skill points refund with no penalty. Try a branch, see whether it matches how you actually play, and move the points somewhere else if it does not.
6. Carry a can opener, lock picks, wire cutters and bolt cutters at all times
Carry a can opener, lock picks, wire cutters and bolt cutters at all times. Each one opens a category of container or gate, and none are heavy relative to what they unlock.
7. Buy a GPS device the first time a trader stocks one
Buy a GPS device the first time a trader stocks one. It marks trader positions on the map, which converts aimless wandering into a repeatable selling circuit.
8. Bandits are a different problem from the undead
Bandits are a different problem from the undead. Bandit Rusher, Assault, Sniper and Boss types shoot back and use cover, so the tactics that work on a crowd of Shamblers will get you killed against them.
9. Airdrops marked with blue smoke contain rations and are worth the detour early, while food rather than ammunition is the thing limiting how far you can travel
Airdrops marked with blue smoke contain rations and are worth the detour early, while food rather than ammunition is the thing limiting how far you can travel.
10. Treat debuffs immediately
Treat debuffs immediately. Bleed, Heavy Bleed, Broken Bones and Radiation Sickness each need a specific medical item, so carry at least one of each instead of a stack of only bandages.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Scavenger (A-Tier):
- Focus on Hunger, thirst and health combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Barrett 50 Cal
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Marksman (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: M4
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how SurrounDead's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Hunger, thirst and health + Skill tree with free respec: Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. Combined with Skill tree with free respec, levelling awards skill points spent in the skills tab of the journal, opened with j.
Radiation and respirator filters + Traders and safe zones: Some areas are irradiated and require one of four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. When paired with Traders and safe zones, traders sit inside safe zones and scattered across the valley, and a gps device puts many of them on your map.
Vehicles as maintenance and storage scaling: Vehicles need upkeep and double as mobile containers, which matters because a run to somewhere like Gladewater Military Camp produces far more weight than a backpack holds.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Barrett 50 Cal | Killing an Undead Boss or Large Undead Boss from outside its aggression range, not for clearing streets. | The heaviest rifle in the game and one of the legendary tier items, which places it above the rare, common and damaged versions of anything else. |
| M4 | General purpose use once suppressed, since it covers most engagement ranges and its ammunition actually turns up. | A 5. |
| Benelli M4 | Building interiors, and Undead Sprinters or Feral Hounds that reach you before you can reposition. | A semi automatic shotgun. |
| Crossbow | Early saves and quiet single target work, not for anything arriving in groups. | Silent, slow to reload, and its bolts can be recovered from bodies. |
| Dark Machete | Clearing Undead Shamblers and Crawlers one at a time without pulling an entire street. | A legendary tier melee weapon, faster than the Camping Axe and silent next to any firearm. |
Location Efficiency
Whitewood (Early game, first hours): A small town in the centre of the valley, south west of the central safe zone, with a single street running through it. It packs a police station, a hospital, a grocery store and a gas station into that one street, which is unusually dense for its size.
New Richland (Mid game): One of the last cities to fall during the outbreak, and correspondingly better stocked and more heavily populated with undead. It is a step up from the small towns rather than an early stop.
The Valley Safe Zone (Any point in a save): The central safe zone and the usual base of operations for a new save. Traders here buy and sell, and the surrounding area is calmer than the rest of the map.
Gladewater Military Camp (Mid to late game): A military site carrying the weapons and ammunition to match, and the threat level that goes with them. Bandit Assault and Bandit Sniper types appear around locations like this in addition to the undead.
Creek Prison (Late game): A walled complex that is hard to enter and harder to leave in a hurry, which is exactly why the loot inside is worth the trip. Plan the exit before you go through the gate.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Firing unsuppressed inside a town. Gunfire pulls undead from streets you have not entered yet, and a suppressor decides whether somewhere like Whitewood is lootable at all.
- Ignoring hunger and thirst while looting. Both meters kill outright, and by the time you notice you are usually too far from water to walk back.
- Entering a radiation zone on a worn filter. Respirator filters have durability, and Radiation Sickness needs a specific cure you may not be carrying.
- Storing everything in one container. Vehicles double as storage for exactly this reason, and spreading loot between a base and a car costs nothing.
- Expecting a finished game. SurrounDead has been in Early Access since June 2022 with a very small team behind it, and systems have changed between updates.
Pro Quick Tips
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
- Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters wear down, so check durability at the boundary rather than discovering the problem once Radiation Sickness is already applied.
- Start with Marksman, switch to Scavenger when ready
- Invest in Barrett 50 Cal above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Whitewood → New Richland → The Valley Safe Zone → Gladewater Military Camp → Creek Prison. See our maps guide
- Hunger, thirst and health + Skill tree with free respec together are stronger than either alone
