SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.
SurrounDead features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Whitewood | Early game, first hours | Police station weapons, hospital medical supplies, grocery store food | Marksman |
| 2 | New Richland | Mid game | City tier loot, dense residential and commercial buildings | Marksman |
| 3 | The Valley Safe Zone | Any point in a save | Traders, safe storage, a fixed reference point for navigation | Scavenger |
| 4 | Gladewater Military Camp | Mid to late game | Military weapons, 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition, attachments | Scavenger |
| 5 | Creek Prison | Late game | High tier loot in a confined space, locked containers for a Lockpicking build | Scavenger |
Whitewood: Starting Area
A small town in the centre of the valley, south west of the central safe zone, with a single street running through it. It packs a police station, a hospital, a grocery store and a gas station into that one street, which is unusually dense for its size.

|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early game, first hours |
| Key Rewards | Police station weapons, hospital medical supplies, grocery store food |
| Recommended Build | Marksman |
| Key Equipment | M4 |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Hunger, thirst and health. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to New Richland.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
New Richland: Early Game
One of the last cities to fall during the outbreak, and correspondingly better stocked and more heavily populated with undead. It is a step up from the small towns rather than an early stop.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid game |
| Key Rewards | City tier loot, dense residential and commercial buildings |
| Recommended Build | Marksman |
| Key Equipment | M4 |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Skill tree with free respec. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for M4 if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in The Valley Safe Zone.
The Valley Safe Zone: Mid Game
The central safe zone and the usual base of operations for a new save. Traders here buy and sell, and the surrounding area is calmer than the rest of the map.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Any point in a save |
| Key Rewards | Traders, safe storage, a fixed reference point for navigation |
| Recommended Build | Scavenger |
| Key Equipment | M4 |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Barrett 50 Cal becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Radiation and respirator filters for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Gladewater Military Camp: Late Game
A military site carrying the weapons and ammunition to match, and the threat level that goes with them. Bandit Assault and Bandit Sniper types appear around locations like this in addition to the undead.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game |
| Key Rewards | Military weapons, 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition, attachments |
| Recommended Build | Scavenger |
| Key Equipment | Barrett 50 Cal |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Barrett 50 Cal should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Vehicles as maintenance and storage mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Creek Prison.
Creek Prison: Endgame
A walled complex that is hard to enter and harder to leave in a hurry, which is exactly why the loot inside is worth the trip. Plan the exit before you go through the gate.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late game |
| Key Rewards | High tier loot in a confined space, locked containers for a Lockpicking build |
| Recommended Build | Scavenger |
| Key Equipment | Barrett 50 Cal |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Trade Runner for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Whitewood → New Richland → The Valley Safe Zone → Gladewater Military Camp → Creek Prison. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
