SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Scavenger
Scavenger is a top-performing option in SurrounDead.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Barrett 50 Cal | The heaviest rifle in the game and one of the legendary tier items, which places it above the rare, common and damaged versions of anything else. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Hunger, thirst and health | Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. |
How to Play Scavenger
Scavenger focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Barrett 50 Cal does the damage and Hunger, thirst and health keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Marksman
Marksman is a strong option in SurrounDead.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | M4 | A 5. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Skill tree with free respec | Levelling awards skill points spent in the Skills tab of the journal, opened with J. |
How to Play Marksman
Marksman focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair M4 with Skill tree with free respec and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Melee Brawler
Melee Brawler is a strong option in SurrounDead.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Benelli M4 | A semi automatic shotgun. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Radiation and respirator filters | Some areas are irradiated and require one of four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. |
How to Play Melee Brawler
Melee Brawler focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Radiation and respirator filters covers the gap Benelli M4 leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Base Builder
Base Builder is a specialized option in SurrounDead.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Crossbow | Silent, slow to reload, and its bolts can be recovered from bodies. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Traders and safe zones | Traders sit inside safe zones and scattered across the valley, and a GPS device puts many of them on your map. |
How to Play Base Builder
Base Builder focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Traders and safe zones rather than raw numbers, and Crossbow is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
B-Tier: Trade Runner
Traders buy loot you cannot use and sell ammunition and medical items you cannot reliably find. Legendary tier gear such as the Battle Ready Glock, Cerberus and Colonel's Revenge sits well above rare, common and damaged in value.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Dark Machete | A legendary tier melee weapon, faster than the Camping Axe and silent next to any firearm. |
| Core Gear | The largest backpack you own, a maintained vehicle, a GPS device | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Vehicle condition first, then backpack size, then Lockpicking for locked containers | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Vehicles as maintenance and storage | Vehicles need upkeep and double as mobile containers, which matters because a run to somewhere like Gladewater Military Camp produces far more weight than a backpack holds. |
How to Play Trade Runner
Run a fixed circuit between one loot area and one trader instead of wandering. Sell damaged duplicates and keep a single repaired example of each calibre you actually shoot.
Traders buy loot you cannot use and sell ammunition and medical items you cannot reliably find. Legendary tier gear such as the Battle Ready Glock, Cerberus and Colonel's Revenge sits well above rare, common and damaged in value.
Why this build works: Dark Machete and Vehicles as maintenance and storage pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. Core gear like The largest backpack you own, a maintained vehicle, a GPS device pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Clear stat priority (Vehicle condition first, then backpack size, then Lockpicking for locked containers) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Marksman: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Scavenger once you understand core mechanics and have access to Barrett 50 Cal
- Keep a Melee Brawler setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Trade Runner for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
