SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Whitewood)
A small town in the centre of the valley, south west of the central safe zone, with a single street running through it. It packs a police station, a hospital, a grocery store and a gas station into that one street, which is unusually dense for its size.
Level/Difficulty: Early game, first hours Key Rewards: Police station weapons, hospital medical supplies, grocery store food
What to Do in Whitewood
- Learn Hunger, thirst and health. Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Marksman as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: M4 or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Hunger, thirst and health fundamentals
- Marksman selected and functional
- Whitewood main content cleared
- Ready for New Richland
Phase 2: Early Game (New Richland)
One of the last cities to fall during the outbreak, and correspondingly better stocked and more heavily populated with undead. It is a step up from the small towns rather than an early stop.
Level/Difficulty: Mid game Key Rewards: City tier loot, dense residential and commercial buildings
What to Do in New Richland
- Work on Skill tree with free respec. Levelling awards skill points spent in the Skills tab of the journal, opened with J. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for M4 if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to The Valley Safe Zone.
- Consider whether Scavenger might suit your playstyle better than Marksman.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Skill tree with free respec integrated into gameplay
- M4 acquired
- New Richland fully cleared
- Ready for The Valley Safe Zone
Phase 3: Mid Game (The Valley Safe Zone)
The central safe zone and the usual base of operations for a new save. Traders here buy and sell, and the surrounding area is calmer than the rest of the map.
Level/Difficulty: Any point in a save Key Rewards: Traders, safe storage, a fixed reference point for navigation
What to Do in The Valley Safe Zone
- Master Radiation and respirator filters. Some areas are irradiated and require one of four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Barrett 50 Cal. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters wear down, so check durability at the boundary rather than discovering the problem once Radiation Sickness is already applied.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Traders and safe zones for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Radiation and respirator filters mastered
- Barrett 50 Cal acquired or in progress
- The Valley Safe Zone fully cleared
- Ready for Gladewater Military Camp
Phase 4: Late Game (Gladewater Military Camp)
A military site carrying the weapons and ammunition to match, and the threat level that goes with them. Bandit Assault and Bandit Sniper types appear around locations like this in addition to the undead.
Level/Difficulty: Mid to late game Key Rewards: Military weapons, 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition, attachments
What to Do in Gladewater Military Camp
- Finalize your build. You should be running Scavenger or Marksman with optimized gear.
- Barrett 50 Cal should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Spend early skill points on Iron Gut. Each level cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent, which directly extends how far from food and water you can operate.
- Vehicles as maintenance and storage optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Creek Prison.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Barrett 50 Cal upgraded to max
- Gladewater Military Camp fully cleared
- Ready for Creek Prison
Phase 5: Endgame (Creek Prison)
A walled complex that is hard to enter and harder to leave in a hurry, which is exactly why the loot inside is worth the trip. Plan the exit before you go through the gate.
Level/Difficulty: Late game Key Rewards: High tier loot in a confined space, locked containers for a Lockpicking build
What to Do in Creek Prison
- Creek Prison tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Skill points refund with no penalty. Try a branch, see whether it matches how you actually play, and move the points somewhere else if it does not.
- The endgame loop: run Creek Prison, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Trade Runner for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Vehicles as maintenance and storage mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Creek Prison fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Firing unsuppressed inside a town. Gunfire pulls undead from streets you have not entered yet, and a suppressor decides whether somewhere like Whitewood is lootable at all.
- Ignoring hunger and thirst while looting. Both meters kill outright, and by the time you notice you are usually too far from water to walk back.
- Entering a radiation zone on a worn filter. Respirator filters have durability, and Radiation Sickness needs a specific cure you may not be carrying.
- Storing everything in one container. Vehicles double as storage for exactly this reason, and spreading loot between a base and a car costs nothing.
- Expecting a finished game. SurrounDead has been in Early Access since June 2022 with a very small team behind it, and systems have changed between updates.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Drop a sleeping bag inside the first defensible building you clear. It sets your respawn, and dying without one puts you a long walk from everything you owned.
- Cook every piece of meat at a cooking fire before eating it. Raw meat carries parasites and costs health, while cooked rabbit, deer, wolf and bear meat all give a health benefit instead.
- Radiation zones need one of the four respirators: Filter Mask, Hazmat, Military or Enhanced Military. Filters wear down, so check durability at the boundary rather than discovering the problem once Radiation Sickness is already applied.
- Spend early skill points on Iron Gut. Each level cuts hunger and thirst loss by 12.5 percent, which directly extends how far from food and water you can operate.
- Skill points refund with no penalty. Try a branch, see whether it matches how you actually play, and move the points somewhere else if it does not.
