SurrounDead is a small team survival game from Zurvivor, published by PlaySurrounDead and in Early Access on Steam since 24 June 2022, set five years after a viral outbreak. Everything happens on one map, Longdown Valley, which holds seven towns including Whitewood, New Richland and Gladewater alongside military camps, a prison, an airfield and three safe zones. The store page still lists multiplayer, quests and farming as planned rather than present, so treat any guide as a snapshot of an unfinished game.

Boss fights are where SurrounDead tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Whitewood Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Early game, first hours Recommended build: Marksman with M4

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Both meters drain constantly and either one will kill you outright. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Hunger, thirst and health to create safe windows.
  • M4 is enough to handle everything here.

New Richland Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Mid game Recommended build: Marksman with M4

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of Skill tree with free respec. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • Skill tree with free respec is critical for these fights.
  • Farm M4 upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to Marksman if your current setup isn't working.

The Valley Safe Zone Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Any point in a save Recommended build: Scavenger with Barrett 50 Cal

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Hunger, thirst and health and Radiation and respirator filters mastery.
  • Barrett 50 Cal makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Gladewater Military Camp Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Mid to late game Recommended build: Scavenger with Barrett 50 Cal

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • Barrett 50 Cal at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

Creek Prison Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Late game Recommended build: Scavenger with Barrett 50 Cal

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Barrett 50 Cal trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Hunger, thirst and health: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
